In this era of reality television and widespread internet hoaxes, the play’s fundamental question of how to define what is real and what is illusion seems more relevant than ever. In his surrealistic story, Italian author Luigi Pirandello confronts actors in a stage rehearsal with characters from an unfinished play, effectively blurring the lines between reality and fiction. While the play’s controversial themes and unusual format found a poor welcome when it opened in 1921, its originality and contribution to the debate on the difference between real life and artifice ensured its long term success. It is now considered one of the most important and influential plays of the 20th century.
